Who We Are

Together, they have over 200 years of experience in the oil, gas and chemical industries. This experience is the braintrust of Competitive Analysis Technologies.

Their combined experience includes 72 years of sales and marketing with leading chemical firms; 25 years in research & development of chemicals; 15 years of import/export experience with specific emphasis in Latin America; three have had international experience as expatriates in foreign countries; two have done extensive electronic database research which, combined, give them 21 years of computer searching experience.

Educationally the members of Competitive Analysis Technologies have degrees in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Marine Resource Management, Marine Transport, Business, Finance, Toxicology, Oceanography as well as MBA's from the University of Houston and Rice University.

Everyone within Competitive Analysis Technologies has extensive career experience with major chemical companies including Amoco Chemical, Ashland Chemicals, Betz Labs, Crown Zellerbach,Exxon Chemical, Marathon Oil, Monsanto, Nalco Chemical, N L Industries, Shell Chemical, Shell Oil, and Schlumberger, as well as Arthur Andersen & Company and NASA.

This combined talent is focused on the oil, gas and chemical industries and it is this focus which provides our client management team with competitive company analysis, market research, competitor intelligence, and industry information services.

Competitive Analysis Technologies is a member of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals and the Association of Independent Information Professionals. William R. Crowley
President

Crowley spent 14 years with Amoco Chemicals, where he held various management positions. His duties included the management of the worldwide sales and marketing efforts for specialty Process Chemicals. He also lived in Norway as an expatriate working in the Norwegian North Sea as Sales Manager for Amoco Chemicals there.

Prior to joining Amoco Chemicals, Crowley spent 6 years with Nalco Chemical in Product Management roles. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he was in charge of Public Affairs for the Texas Gulf Coast region. Crowley has a BS in Chemistry (Cum Laude) and graduate work in Geology from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

He is the Contributing Editor of "Hydrocarbon Processing on the Internet" for Hydrocarbon Processing Magazine and author of "Oil & Gas on the Internet", " Organic & PetroChemicals on the Internet" and "Inorganic Chemicals and Minerals on the Internet".

He authored the article "Drilling for Oil and Gas on the Internet" in the Nov/Dec 1996 issue of Database Magazine for information Professionals. He also directed the multi-client studies "Upgrading Heavy Hydrocarbon Imports - 1994" and "1993 U.S. Fuel Terminals Survey" and was recently the Chairman of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals and is a member of the Association of Independent information Professionals. Barry M. O'Brien
Strategic Analysis

Barry retired from Exxon Chemical Company after 38 years of service, most recently as Worldwide Strategic Planning Manager for Exxon Application Chemicals. He directed strategy formulation for Exxon Energy Chemicals, Tomah Products and Callaway Chemical Company and was deeply instrumental in the creation of the $500 million Nalco/Exxon Chemical joint venture.

Stanley J. Vaughan
Financial Analysis

Stan worked with Amoco Chemicals for two years, where he was the Manager, International Operations Services. There he provided both technical and financial support for the company's international sales and marketing efforts. He spent three years with Exxon Energy Chemicals serving first as Operations Services Manager, then Manager, Latin America Region. He was also a Staff Consultant for Arthur Andersen & Co.

Les Boydstun
Downstream Sales


Boydstun has 31 years experience in the oil and gas industries. Four years as Account Manager for Lubrizol Corporation, serving 17 southern states led to 15 years in sales management with Nalco Chemical Company, including Midwest and Gulf Coast assignments. Boydstun joined Betz Laboratories as District Manager in refinery process chemicals, before moving to The Woodlands, Texas corporate office as Manager of Corporate Sales. Betz Laboratories corporate assignments also included 3 years in fuels additive sales development and corporate marketing.
 
Boydstun has a double major B.A. in chemistry and biology, with graduate work in Biochemistry at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Contact him at sales@catsites.com.

Jay Distefano
US Sales


Jay started his career in the chemical industry as Production Superintendent for Crown Zellerbach. He moved on to sales with Nalco Chemical, eventually becoming Vice President of Sales for Arco Performance Chemicals. He was also the President of Arco Performance Chemicals joint venture with Occidental Chemical. After Baker Hughes merged Arco Performance and Petrolite into their chemical operations, Jay was Director of Corporate Accounts.

Jay has a BS in Chemistry from Louisiana State University.

Kay Crowley
IT Manager


Kay's experience with computer operations began in 1978 as the Director of Data Processing for Systems Material Handling Inc. in Lenexa, Kansas. She designed and ran our original bulletin board service in 1994, and more recently, designed the CAT website. Kay also designed web pages for the Prodigy online service, beginning in early 1995. She currently provides web design services for a number of clients, including the Shell Motorist Club.
 
Kay designed the format for our popular series of "on the Internet" publications, both hard copy and electronic versions.

Kathy Sturgeon
Office Manager

Kathy SturgeonSturgeon obtained 21 years of diverse administrative experience with Amoco until its merger with BP in December 1998. Kathy spent most of her career at Amoco in the International Materials Management Services organization, where she handled both domestic and international procurement. She also was a key player in bringing the office supply agreement to a national level for the company. Kathy's most recent assignment at Amoco was in the Worldwide Exploration Business Group as a team member of the Customer Value Added (CVA) team. The primary focus of this team was to better position Amoco in the marketplace by obtaining a greater understanding of their customers' critical decision making factors and how they were positioned against their competitors in these areas. Michael Duncombe
European Sales

Mike worked with Amoco Chemicals for three years as Manager, Process Chemicals Europe. There he was responsible for the management of sales, distribution and technical service for the company's marketing efforts in the refining and petrochemical industries of Europe. His prior experience includes Water Management & Gamlen, Ltd., and as General Manager of Gamlen Chemical Co. (UK) Ltd., as well as Cairn Chemical and Monsanto Ltd.

Duncombe holds advanced certification in Chemistry, is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Directors and served as Flying Officer in the British RAF Volunteer Reserve. He currently resides in Maidenhead, England, just outside of London. Contact him at MichaelDuncombe@compuserve.com.

Louis A. Corona
Latin American Sales

Corona retired from Amoco Chemicals after 38 years of international sales and marketing experience in the chemical industry. While he was International Sales Manager, he established subsidiaries in Trinidad and Argentina, as well as distributors and sales networks in Canada, Mexico, Germany and Japan. He has traveled extensively throughout the world and negotiated joint ventures on behalf of his marketing efforts. Prior to joining Amoco, Lou was with Armour Chemical Co.

BS in Chemistry from Roosevelt University Lou currently resides in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
