"Africa is a continent of 54 countries with an estimated end-1994 population of 700 million people. The upstream oil industry is key to the continent of Africa and in 1994 produced 6.86 million barrels per day (342 million tonnes) of over 40 types of crude oil. Africa's upstream oil industry is dominated by 5 countries which together account for 90% of the continent's oil production. The leading oil producing countries are Algeria, Libya, and Egypt in North Africa, and Angola and Nigeria in sub-Saharan Africa. Other oil producing countries are Gabon, Congo and Cameroon. In the next few years, a number of other African countries aim to increase their output or become first time producers. Included in this list are Chad, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, Zaire, Namibia, South Africa and Madagascar while Mozambique and Tanzania are potential gas producers."
