The single largest market for methanol is in the production of methyl tertiary butly ether (MTBE), the oxygenate additive used in cleaner-burning Reformulated Gasoline (RFG). AMI was formed in 1989, during the height of the debate on amendments to the Clean Air Act, and worked to achieve inclusion of an oxygenate mandate as part of the RFG program. AMI was also a signatory to the "reg-neg" proceedings that EPA used in writing the final regulations for the program."
